You can try to recreate these examples or experiment with your own ideas. We are going to explore Illustrator’s “Pathfinder Panel”.ġ - In Illustrator, create a “New Document”. Lastly, Minus Back mode creates reverse cut-outs or hollow shapes from overlapping shapes like letters, numbers, or icons. Crop mode creates clipping masks or frames from overlapping shapes such as photos, portraits, or collages. Merge mode simplifies overlapping shapes with the same fill color like logos, icons, or cartoons. Trim mode creates silhouettes or cut-outs from overlapping shapes like animals, plants, or landscapes. Divide mode separates shapes from overlapping shapes such as puzzle pieces, mosaic tiles, or stained glass windows. Exclude mode is used to create contrast or patterns from non-overlapping shapes like stripes, dots, or checkerboards. Intersect mode creates interesting shapes from overlapping shapes such as crescents, rings, or polygons. Minus Front mode is used to create negative space or hollow shapes like letters, numbers, or icons. Unite mode, for instance, can create simple or complex shapes from basic shapes such as circles, squares, triangles, or stars.

To illustrate how pathfinder operations can be used in vector illustration, here are some examples of different effects and styles that can be achieved with them. Minus Back works like Minus Front but subtracts bottommost object from objects above it, creating reverse cut-out effect. Outline converts selected objects into outlines. Crop removes everything outside boundary of topmost object. Merge works like Trim but also combines shapes that have same fill color into one. Trim removes parts of the selected objects that are hidden by the topmost object. Divide splits the selected objects into separate pieces along their overlapping edges. Exclude creates a new shape from the area where the selected objects do not overlap. Intersect creates a new shape from the area where the selected objects overlap. Minus Front subtracts the shape of the topmost object from the shape of the objects below it, creating a cut-out effect. Unite merges the selected objects into one shape, filling the overlapping areas with the color of the topmost object. These can be used to modify the paths and outlines of the selected objects. The six pathfinders are Divide, Trim, Merge, Crop, Outline and Minus Back. The four shape modes are Unite, Minus Front, Intersect and Exclude, which can be used to create a new shape from two or more selected objects. Pathfinder operations are divided into two categories: shape modes and pathfinders.
